Having had success as a songwriter, receiving an RIAA certified Gold Record for "A Soldier's King" recorded by Kenny Rogers, and as a performer touring the United States, Kenny Ray Horton is enjoying the ride as he journeys through his musical life.
Born in the southwest Missouri town of Rocky Comfort, Kenny Ray set out after college for a career in music and has had fantastic luck in finding it. His bluegrass and country background in Missouri combined with his experience as a staff songwriter and demo & background singer in Nashville has led him to his latest adventure.
Since Kenny Ray was named as the newest lead singer of the United States Navy's premier country and bluegrass band - Country Current, things have been yet another wild ride in life. His debut show at the Withlacoochie Bluegrass Festival in Withlacoochie, FL in April of 2008 was a success.
“The audience was obviously looking at me, the new guy, wondering what to expect. When they erupted into applause and smiles half way through the first song that I sang, no one could believe the relief I had” said Kenny Ray.
The group was formed in 1973 and Kenny Ray is only the fourth lead singer named to the group. An enormous honor to represent the country and step into a position that is prestigious in the Navy as well as the bluegrass world.
Kenny Ray's background has primarily been in the country music industry, but his roots in the southwestern Missouri bluegrass helped earn him the position.
"I'm amazed," states Kenny Ray. "I get the privilege to serve my country and play the music I truly love. Not many folks get that chance in their lives, and I know that I am very lucky to get this opportunity."
Look for new music coming out in March of 2009 from Kenny Ray Horton. His goal of three new records this year seems daunting to some, but as Kenny Ray laughs, "It's just a bunch of good friends getting together and recording the fun they're having!"
