I sat watching the news one night after the war on terror had begun in Afghanistan. I heard the news of a group of soldiers getting killed when their plane struck the side of a mountain. I wondered whhat story they might tell and how they might tell it if they were here with us. in that same vein, I continued it right on back to th attack on Pearl Harbor. Needless to say, this tune gets a few old salty sailors from bakc in the day, and from today as well.
VERSE 1
I am PFC Bohannon, Devil Dog down to the core
A figment of your imagination I'm a man who lives no more
I died cause I stood proudly for the stars and stripes
In the mountains of Afghanistan late one fateful night
I leave behind my family tears rollin down their face
In Maramar, California God, what a gorgeous place
Though I hate to say this that's how my story ends
With every life that's ending, there's another one begins
CHORUS
I may be gone but I won't be forgot
They'll don my grave with forget-me-nots
Yes, I know I've seen my last sun rise
But I've been told that when a soldier dies
An eagle cries
VERSE 2
My name is Sgt. Calloway I hail from Witchita
I volunteered for the Army like my Dad and my Grandpa
I died one Teusday morning by a German soldiers gun
They say I lost that battle but I heard the war was won
We were just outside of Bastone in an old abandone farm
I was patching up James Coulter
He took a bad one in the arm
I knew he was right behind me
When I looked in Coulter's eyes
The last thing that I thought of
Was my children and my wife
VERSE 3
I am Seaman Michael Westerman and I was laid to rest
Back in 1941 the Japanese put us to the test
U.S.S. Arizona she took an aweful hit
I felt the huge explosion we listed port and that was it
I heard a bandsman keep on singing
As we hit the ocean floor
I was stuck in a flooded cabin
Couldn't budge the P-way door
I glanced out the porthole
At the Godforsaken sight
Then my whole world faded black
Even darker than the night
